FAQ

It's easy!

  1. Find those priceless photos in the attic, family album or shoebox under the bed and send them to us (either by mail or electronically, see below).

  2. We evaluate the work to be done and email you a no-obligation quotation for the total cost with a link where you can authorize credit card payment through the PayPal secure online payment processing service.

  3. When payment is received, we complete the work and ship your order and any originals sent to us within a few days. If you decide not to have the work done and have shipped photos to us, simply pay the shipping and handling fee (same as for completed orders: $10 Canada, $15 for the US) and we return them to you.

Notes:

  • You can also pay by money order (negotiable in Canada), however this will delay order processing by a few days.
  • All price quotes remain in effect for 30 days.
  • If at any time we are unsure of your preferences while undertaking the job, we will contact you via email, most likely with a proof copy, to clarify before proceeding.

How to send your photos

There are two options for submitting photographs to us: ship the items to us for scanning or send electronic files.

Pack and Ship
To avoid damage during transit, please pack your photos, negatives or slides carefully using appropriate packing materials. We suggest:

  • Place a piece of plain white paper over the face of each photo for protection.
  • Sandwich photos between two sheets of stiff cardboard and apply tape to each side of the cardboard to minimize movement of the photographs.
  • Enclose negative strips and slides in appropriate envelopes and then tape to a piece of cardboard.
  • Always remove frames and glass unless doing so would risk further damage (acceptable scans can be made through glass so do not attempt to remove a photo that is stuck to the glass). If you must send glass, wrap it with bubble packing and place in a box filled with Styrofoam peanuts. This provides maximum protection without adding much weight.
  • Complete the Quote By Mail form, print it out and enclose a copy with your package.
  • Pack everything in a padded envelope, photographic mailer or cardboard box.

Ship the package to:

Boss Photographic

We recommend shipping your valuable photos via priority mail or, for faster service, the lower cost services of a reliable express company like FedEx or UPS ("ground" or "second day air"). We don't usually recommend insuring the package since photographs are not easily replaced anyway.

Electronic Files
Sending electronic files provides the fastest turnaround time and your photos remain in your hands. You can scan photos yourself or, if you do not have a scanner or are not comfortable scanning your photos, copy shops like Kinko's can do it for you.

Prints should be scanned using the RGB color setting (even for black and while images), IBM PC format, no enhancements (sharpening, etc.), 300dpi or higher, and high quality JPEG or TIFF file format.  If you are requesting an enlargement, scan at a higher resolution setting. For example, if you have a 4x5" original and you would like the restored photograph to be 8" X 10", then you need to scan the original image at 600 dpi in order to obtain reasonable results.

Negatives and slides should be scanned at 1800dpi minimum, preferably 2400dpi or higher.

Individual files or multiple files up to 10MB total can be emailed to us as attachments -- just follow the instructions on the Quote By Email form.

Or you can send us files on CD -- complete the Quote By Mail form and print a copy, package it with the CD in a padded envelope and ship to us at the address shown above.
